About
I believe that there is a subtle magnetism in Nature, which if we unconsciously yield to it, will direct us aright.

My art practice is a meditation that leads me to an increased awareness of my place in the universe. Incorporating some aspect of Nature in my pieces results in an inner feeling of peace and wholeness.
My botanical art begins with renderings from living plants. As I work I feel a strong connection with the life force invigorating the plant as well as the beauty of its structure, texture and colors. The piece is complete when I have made my best effort to communicate the essence of my subject.
Bio
My heritage includes early Dutch settlers who first inhabited New York in the mid-1600s. Hendrick Rycken was the original progenitor of the Suydam family in America. Because of the large number of offspring from those early families, today, Suydam family members are found in every state (and around the world) and in every walk of life. Several Suydams have been prominent in America's art heritage.
My personal art journey has evolved in fits and starts, and always around the current activities in my life. I am largely self-taught and have preferred experimenting on my own and taking courses that satisfy a particular interest or need. I am grateful for the joy art has brought to my life and remain excited about future projects and experiences.
